During my Graphic Design 3 class, I participated in a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project where students from Florida International University and Central University of Technology in South Africa worked together. The theme, “Draw A Child,” invited us to create posters that illustrated a child facing a particular life challenge. Each poster was uniquely designed to reflect the diverse issues children around the world face, with a focus on empathy and storytelling through visual design.

Poster: "Acceptance"
For my piece, "Acceptance," I chose to depict a child grappling with cultural identity, a struggle I can personally relate to. Growing up in a country as diverse as the U.S., it's common to face the challenge of fitting in, especially when the way others perceive those who are "different" can make you question your place in the world.

Growing up in a country as diverse as the U.S., it's common to face the challenge of fitting in, especially when the way others perceive those who are "different" can make you question your place in the world.
The question of identity can be overwhelming: Should I conform to the expectations of my parents, my friends, or the people around me? How do I reconcile my heritage with the desire to belong?
In this poster, I illustrated a sad child lying awake at night, wondering why her culture or differences are viewed as negative. The tears she sheds symbolize the emotional weight of this internal struggle, overflowing as she navigates the confusion and sense of alienation that often accompanies the search for acceptance.
